Because one story just isn’t enough In true everybody else is doing it, so why cant we?* fashion, Im posting my own tale of being admitted last year. Since this is the second year that EA acceptees were sent cardboard tubes, I thought my story would be fun to read. Be warned I may (read: will) overdramatize a good chunk of this, solely because I can. Three people from my school applied EA last year, and we were all insanely worried about our decisions. The day tubes made it to South Florida, Neha 10 (thats Mr. Neha to you and Jess) got hers during our Calc BC class her mom was home when the mail came, so she drove to school to give her the tube. Kris 10 and I were in the same class and left to think about how our fates were still unknown and great, Neha had gotten in! But what about the two of us? What was going on? WERE WE IN OR NOT? Needless to say, everything our teacher said about Taylor Series did not exactly register. But thats not the point here. (We were all accepted, by the way, and now the three of us are here.) Since I just tried to rewrite this story and did so poorly, Im essentially copying and pasting the post I made in my personal blog a year ago. Enjoy. So after an impossibly long bus ride, I dashed home to check the mailbox. My parents are in NYC at the moment (todays their anniversary theyve been gone a week), and my stepdad keeps the mailbox key on his keyring, so I was essentially screwed. I yanked at the box, hoping that it was by some divine miracle unlocked. No such luck. I ran into my house and searched all the counters and drawers for a key that might quite possibly open the mailbox. Not a thing. Some higher power hates me. I called my stepdad, who said, Dont worry about it, just calm down, well be home tomorrow and itll all be fine. And Im like, NO! You dont understand! Must have MIT decision NOW NOW NOW or else Ill die! He handed the phone over to my mom, because he didnt seem to know how to handle a neurotic college applicant waiting for a decision. (Come on, who can blame him?) She wasnt much better her words to me consisted of, Dont panic, when we get home you can get into the mailbox and see whats going on. Hey, were on 34th Street and were about to go to Chinatown, so well see you when we come back tomorrow, okay? Thank you, mother. Your words of reassurance make my life. I paced around the house, wondering what to do about the situation, and I saw only one way out: the crowbar. tell me, what kind of family doesnt own a crowbar?! Dont they understand that you can use it in desperate situations to break into things, like, you know, mailboxes?! So I was panicked and worried and stressed to the max, when I saw one microscopic shot at knowing my decision. I said to myself, Hey, self (give me some credit I didnt actually say that), what if I have a tube, and its just too big to fit into the mailbox? Dont they usually leave packages like that right by the front door? What if its there RIGHT NOW, and I didnt notice it? I ran to my front door, wrenched it open, and there, behind the potted plant that always obscures virtually everything around it was a two-foot-long tube. Yeah. I know. It was right by the front door, and of course I missed it when I walked in. Go ahead, laugh at me for overreacting and nearly resorting to brute force. I may have absolutely no common sense, but I GOT INTO MIT! I want to dance around for the rest of the day, I swear. You know, I think I will. Bring on the music. Decisions online? Pffft. This seems so much more fun. The heart-attack-inducing suspense! Come on! ^_^ One year later, it is the END OF TERM. Well, almost. Classes are over, and theyve only given way to studying for FINALS GAH. Its hard here, but definitely worth it. Coming up: a day in the life of well, me. Feminist Gloria Anzaldua was a guiding force in the  Chicano and Chicana movement  and  lesbian/queer theory.  She was a poet, activist, theorist, and teacher who lived from September 26, 1942, to May 15, 2004. Her writings blend styles, cultures, and languages, weaving together poetry, prose, theory, autobiography, and experimental narratives. Life in the Borderlands Gloria Anzaldua was born in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas in 1942. She described herself as a Chicana/Tejana/lesbian/dyke/feminist/writer/poet/cultural theorist, and these identities were just the beginning of the ideas she explored in her work. Gloria Anzaldua was the daughter of a Spanish American and an American Indian. Her parents were farm workers; during her youth, she lived on a ranch, worked in the fields and became intimately aware of the Southwest and South Texas landscapes. She also discovered that Spanish speakers existed on the margins in the United States. She began to experiment with writing and gain awareness of social justice issues. Gloria Anzaldua’s book Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, published in 1987, is the story of existence in several cultures near the Mexico/Texas border. It is also the story of Mexican-Indian history, mythology, and cultural philosophy. The book examines physical and emotional borders, and its ideas range from Aztec religion to the role of women in Hispanic culture to how lesbians find a sense of belonging in a straight world. The hallmark of Gloria Anzaldua’s work is the interweaving of poetry with prose narrative. The essays interspersed with poetry in Borderlands/La Frontera reflect her years of feminist thought and her non-linear, experimental manner of expression. Feminist Chicana Consciousness Gloria Anzaldua received her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1969 and a master’s in English and Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. Later in the 1970s, she taught a course at UT-Austin called â€Å"La Mujer Chicana.† She said that teaching the class was a turning point for her, connecting her to the queer community, writing and feminism. Gloria Anzaldua moved to California in 1977, where she devoted herself to writing. She continued to participate in political activism, consciousness-raising, and groups such as the Feminist Writers Guild. She also looked for ways to build a multicultural, inclusive feminist movement. Much to her dissatisfaction, she discovered there were very few writings either by or about women of color.   Some readers have struggled with the multiple languages in her writings – English and Spanish, but also variations of those languages. According to Gloria Anzaldua, when the reader does the work of piecing together fragments of language and narrative, it mirrors the way feminists must struggle to have their ideas heard in a patriarchal society. The Prolific 1980s Gloria Anzaldua continued to write, teach, and travel to workshops and speaking engagements throughout the 1980s. She edited two anthologies that collected the voices of feminists of many races and cultures. This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color was published in 1983 and won the Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award. Making Face Making Soul/Haciendo Caras: Creative and Critical Perspectives by Feminists of Color was published in 1990. It included writings by famous feminists such as Audre Lorde and Joy Harjo, again in fragmented sections with titles such as â€Å"Still Trembles our Rage in the Face of Racism† and â€Å"(De)Colonized Selves. Other Life Work Gloria Anzaldua was an avid observer of art and spirituality and brought these influences to her writings as well. She taught throughout her life and worked on a doctoral dissertation, which she was unable to finish due to health complications and professional demands. UC Santa Cruz later awarded her a posthumous Ph.D. in literature. Gloria Anzaldua won many awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fiction Award and the Lambda Lesbian Small Press Book Award. She died in 2004 from complications related to diabetes. There are several theories of education. There are teacher centered and student centered ones, each one has its pros and cons. Educators use all different kinds of philosophy, many even combine philosophies. .After researching and observing different ways of teaching I have found I like a lot of them but only few aspects of each. I do believe in a student centered atmosphere so Progressivism and Reconstructionism are most logical choices. Progressivism focuses on the students benefits, this theory allows for greater student involvement, which I find to be a very important aspect. I believe it also hinders there learning, this theory overprotects students too much. When they reach the next grade or transfer schools they are unprepared for the harsher ways of learning. So I do not believe this method should be as a whole. I would use certain features in my classroom. There is also Reconstructionism which promotes social progress but this only focuses on developing an improved world. People say its student based but I believe that its more teachers based because it tries to turn student into socially reformed adults. It doesn’t focus on each child but rather the whole group. In fact, I never thought the concept of writing was that complicated enough to be discussed in a classroom setting. However, as demonstrated throughout history different forms of communication, such as writing, have shaped and evolved human interaction and invoked societal change. Consequently, I asked myself how something so simple has been taken for granted for so long. Beowulf: An Epic Hero Essay Being a hero can be defined many different ways. Several qualities like courage, respect, and strength can define heroism. A hero is noted for his or her actions for being brave, powerful, and acting with honor. In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending the Danish king, Hrothgar, and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power and strength to protect others. Beowulf embodies the qualities of bravery, being powerful, and demonstrating his honor; therefore, he can be considered a true hero. A way Beowulf demonstrates his heroism is the way he stays true to the Geats by honoring them. Before going into battle with Grendel’s mother, he tells Hrothgar to do something for him, â€Å" If your enemy should end my life, then, oh generous prince, forever the father and protector of all whom I leave behind me, here in your hands, my beloved Comrades left with no leader, their leader dead. †(ll. 1478-1482). By this dialogue, he expresses how much he cares for his soldiers and respects his men and country. He is also honorable to his lord, Hrothgar. Anything I can do, here on this earth to earn your love, oh great king, anything more than I have done, battle I can fight in your honor, summon me, I will come as I came once before. †(ll. 1822-1826). Beowulf’s honor far exceeds the average person’s, and his actions and words show for it. Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, â€Å"I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me. †(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, â€Å"When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster. †(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem. A final example of heroic qualities shown by Beowulf is his power. The mental and physical strength is mandatory to being a hero. No Dane, before Beowulf’s arrival, is able to defeat Grendel because of fear and weakness. Beowulf has the power to physically cripple and defeat Grendel. He is able to observe that Grendel’s exterior is impenetrable, so he then injures him the only way possible, from the inside out. By tearing the beast’s limb off of his body, Beowulf is able to defeat the once thought immortal creature by being overpowering. â€Å" not even the sharpest of swords could have cut it through, broken it off the monster’s arm and ended its life, as Beowulf had don armed with only his bare hands. †(ll. 987-990). Beowulf also uses his strength to lift the sword, â€Å"so massive that no ordinary man could lift †(l. 1560), when trying to slay the she-demon in the marsh. Beowulf and his power are always victorious over every conflict faced. In conclusion, Beowulf’s actions speak for what he stands for and believes in. Bravery is shown in his character by describing how he approaches his enemies and miscreants. Even at the time of his death, Beowulf shows honor and power by keeping his promise to defeat the malevolent dragon. By honoring his country and exerting his strength and power to keep guard for others, he is heroic . Although some may have various definitions of a hero, it would be difficult to disagree; by being brave, powerful, and honorable, Beowulf embodies the qualities of a true hero.
